About the project

The “Children’s Green Network” project in Velika Gorica was developed as a city-wide system of connected interventions that raises the standard of school and children’s spaces, walking corridors and smaller green nodes across neighbourhoods. The project introduces a network logic: each intervention is independently useful, while also being designed as part of a wider whole that, over time, improves the quality of everyday movement, outdoor stay and play in the city.
The network brings together nine spatial interventions into a functional green infrastructure system. At its core are spaces used by children every day, but also by the wider community: schoolyards and outdoor sports areas, promenades and corridors, urban green spaces and urban woodlands, with the aim of making green public space the standard rather than the exception. The project has been approved for co-financing of 4.45 mil. € in non-repayable funding, with a total project value of 5.28 mil €.

EU ALIGNMENT AND PROJECT LOGIC

The EU logic of the Children’s Green Network is measurable impact delivered through a system: more shade and a better microclimate, resilience to heat extremes, stormwater management through increased permeable surfaces, and enhanced biodiversity. This is achieved through concrete design elements and a replicable model across multiple locations, treating green infrastructure as essential city infrastructure and a long-term development tool.
The second key is inclusivity and spatial quality. Spaces are designed to be equally usable and legible for everyone, especially children and people with reduced mobility, through clear circulation, safety and comfortable outdoor stay in greenery. The project also has an educational dimension, as everyday use helps build a relationship with space and nature.
